iPhones Ruin Children’s Ability to Talk

IPHONES are killing children’s ability to communicate, the shadow education secretary has said.

Tristram Hunt also said poor parenting was “at fault” with families failing to nurture children’s “ emotional development” and instead letting them scroll down their smartphones. His comments follow warnings from leading academics that mobiles should come with health warnings.

Mr. Hunt said he had had frequent conversations with primary head teachers who talked about “the challenge they face in getting their pupils up to the relevant level of progress, given their various developmental delays”. He said, based on their evidence, “more children are presenting with serious difficulties when it comes to speech and language. In disadvantaged communities, children’s ability to talk, to play, to interact is often markedly behind. When I ask if the condition is getting worse, all heads say yes and they blame the iPhone”.

Writing for The Daily Telegraph, Mr. Hunt blamed “poor parenting” rather than a disadvantaged background. He said: “All too often it is schools which are left to address the learning gap, but it is poor parenting which is at fault.

“This isn’t a question of money: every parent can afford to talk to their child. It is a question of culture and understanding”.
