How the study was performed

The study analyzed the work content required to handle telephone transactions, comparing use of handsets and Plantronics quick-disconnect handsets. Time and motion studies were made at four firms, observing a variety of personnel with previous headset experience. Work content of approximately 2,000 telephone transactions was evaluated during an eight day period. Jobs covered included inside sales, travel agents, technical field sales support, and stockbrokers. One-hand versus two-hand typing was also analyzed.

Findings and Conclusions

Time spent in telephone-related work activities is substantially reduced when Plantronics headsets are substituted for telephone handsets.

Free hands mean up to 43% increase in productivity

Assuming an average phone transaction time of 3.2 minutes and tasks requiring 2 hands are performed during the call (such as using a keyboard or searching for reference material), using Plantronics headsets increases productivity up to 43%. Calls can be made without interruption and without putting down the phone. That means reduced mistakes, reduced costs and improved service.

Reduced call placement / response time means thousands of more calls

Plantronics headsets can cut call placement time by 44%, call response time by 72% and hand-up time by 59%. Where the entire workday is spent in phone conversations, headset users complete an average of 16 more calls per day and 11% increase. That means thousands of extra calls per year per person, reducing the need to hire and train new employees.

Other benefits – More than just improved efficiency

Where Plantronics headsets are used, overall employee morale also goes up because people feel better and work with fewer mechanical distractions. And headsets reduce employee down-time. Without headsets, employees must pinch the headset between the shoulder and chin to free their hands. This leads to sore shoulders and neck, often resulting in medical time off and trips to the chiropractor.
